Anatomy of the Ship: Schooner Bertha L. Downs
The North American schooner Bertha L. Downs was one of the many large four-, five-, and six-masted schooners built on the banks of the Kennebeck River at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. She was launched in 1908 and after a decade in the lumber and coal trade was sold to Danish owners. After a long and profitable career under five national flags, she was finally broken up in 1950. A detailed documentation of this ship and others of her class.
