The memoirs of Werner Hirschmann, a former German submarine officer who fought in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. He recounts his childhood in Nazi Germany, his attendance at the German Naval Academy, his service in the U-Boot-Waffe from 1940 to 1945 and his experiences as a POW. Among the more interesting episodes are the author's experience on board a destroyer that escorted the "Bismark" on her last operation; being beseiged by the American army at the U-boat base in the Lorient' and his last patrol to North America during which his submarine sank a Canadian warship.
