Starting with City of Rome in 1881, the book covers the end of single screw steamers with clipper stems and still rigged for emergency sails, through the early twin screw steamers such as Teutonic and Campania, the advent of the four funnel express liners such as Mauretania and Olympic, the growth of the luxury liner between the wars including Queen Mary and Normandie, and the post war efforts of the liner companies to fight off the growth of jet travel and their acceptance of the cruise market. Each liner is illustrated, with many previously unpublished photographs.
