The fascinating story of Howard Blackburn, whose achievements at sea are legendary among singlehanded sailors. Blackburn and a partner set sail from Gloucester Harbour in 1883 to fish from his dory. A sudden squall erupted and they were blown offshore into the Atlantic, soon becoming prey to freezing wind and rain. When his companion died, Blackburn rowed more than 100 miles, finally reaching the Newfoundland coast, a dreadful journey that cost him all his fingers. Despite his disability, he later went on to break the record for the fastest lone voyage across the Atlantic.
