McCulloch started his career as a seafarer in England during WWII and after the war emigrated to Canada where he rose to the position of Regional Director of the Canadian Hydrographic Services. This is the story of his early years at sea, first as a cadet and junior officer during the wars years and then as seafarer on deep sea ships and the Great Lakes. There is an obvious attempt to tell al that can be told with a certain amount of decorum, as seafaring in those days was a mixture of hard, miserable work interposed with periods of intense exhileration and satisfaction.
