The "Ryan's Commander" capsized off Spillar's Cove, near Bonavista, on Setptember 19, 2004. In the tragic wreck, two brothers were lost: Dave and June (Joe) Ryan. A federal report concluded that vessel design was one of the factors causing the capsizing. Survivors of the Ryan brothers recently filed suit against the Canadian government and the makers of the vessel, arguing its design was unsafe and untrustworthy. This is the personal story told by the sister of the two lost fishermen.

I cried, I read into the night and I mourn for Dave and June. My heart aches for the families and extended families left behind. I was born a fisherman's daughter. Although the nets and traps have long be hauled, Dad no longer is with us and the boat lies to the wharf I will never tell these wonderful people that I know what they are going through. If you have never suffered such a tragedy then you will never understand the depths of their grief. I am so glad this book was written and published. The story had to be told and in my opinion the information is well presented. I had no idea the take off times for Search and Rescue. Do the RCMP or any other essential service roll up the streets and go home at supper time. I think not. I cannot explain the rage I felt when I read that part in the book. Our Government need to get their heads out of their asses and protect the people.
