The SS Atlantic had 18 successful crossings under her keel when she ran aground off the coast of Nova Scotia early on the morning of April 1, 1873, and quickly sank. Her hold was filled with immigrants voyaging from Liverpool to New York; 562 people on board were lost--most of them women and children. The two Nova Scotian authors, both divers, piece together the story of the worst marine disaster of the 19th century.
