Winston Specials: Troopships via the Cape, 1940-1943

In the summer of 1940, Britain faced the prospect of invasion while also seeing vital Middle East oil supplies threatened by Axis forces then in Libya and Eritrea. A decision was taken to reinforce the Middle and Far East by procuring and hastily converting Britain’s passenger liners to carry troops on the long 13,000 mile route around Africa. This is the previously untold story of how the ships were taken up from trade, where and who they embarked, the critical shortage of both liners and Royal Navy escorts and all the difficulties encountered along the way in keeping them fuelled and watered and free of enemy interference, and of the wonderful hospitality received by the crews in South African ports.
