  The Wreck of the Medusa

Wreck of the Medusa
In 1816, the French frigate "Medusa" hit a reef, setting in motion the most famous sea disaster of the nineteenth century. Following the wreck, 147 men and one woman were herded onto a makeshift raft. Without a compass, many provisions, hit by a vicious storm, and exposed to sweltering heat during the day, the group set upon each other: mayhem, mutiny, and murder unsued. When rescue arrive, only fifteen were alive. This ill-fated voyage inspired the famous painting in the Louvre, "The Raft of the Medusa." The book is part ripping yarn, part political analysis, and part art history.
