War in the St. Lawrence: The Forgotten U-Boat Battles on Canada’s Shores
by Sarty, Roger
Between 1942 and 1944, 15 German submarines destroyed or severely damaged 27 ships in Canadian waters, including three Canadian warships, an American Army troop transport, and the Newfoundland ferry “Caribou”. More than 250 lives were lost in these attacks, which were the only armed hositilities to take place within our borders in the 20th century. The defensive actions were the only battles fought almost exclusively by Canadian forces under Canadian high command. Sarty takes a new look at the battles and, using recently declassified information, contests the verdict that Canadian defensive actions were battles lost.attles lost.
