4th ed. The 1973 MARPOL convention, as amended by its 1978 Protocol is the international instrument controlling pollution by oil and came into effect in October 1983. The Guide, which describes the procedure for retention of oil residues on board, is intended to help shipboard personnel to comply with the oil discharge limitations contained in Annex 1 of MARPOL. This revised edition takes account of the 1992 ammendments to Annex 1.
