North Star of Herschel Island
by Macdonald, R. Bruce
The current owner of “North Star” tells the complete story of her amazing career. She began her working life frozen into the Beaufort Sea ice while trappers worked their lines. In the two ice-free months each year, she’d take a whole villageóincluding sled dogsóout to sell furs and obtain supplies, then race to get home before the passage re-froze. “North Star” went on to be an oil-exploration†vessel and an Inuit sail-training ship, to participate in the survey of the B.C./Alaska boundary, and to take †Cambridge University researchers to look for mermaids.†The author’s extensive research included interviews with Inuvialuit elders in the High Arctic. Vividly illustrated with never-before-published photographs.
