  1. Ontario Sailor

Polar expedition was all the rage in the late 1800s and early 1900s, with nations and adventure sailors searching for the elusive Northwest Passage and racing for bragging rights to be the first to the North Pole (and later, the South Pole). Norwegian scientist and explorer Fridtjof Nansen had a plan of his own. Fresh from his famous crossing of Greenland in 49-days by skiing and dragging sleds in 1888, Nansen had a specially reinforced wooden ship built that could withstand being frozen into the Arctic sea ice for three season, as he and a small crew drifted around the frozen sea. This is the story of the Nobel prize-winning scientist’s ship called Fram that took crews on three expeditions, including being frozen in, mapping the Canadian Arctic and making a two-year journey to the Antarctic. Nansen died in 1930 and his ship is on display at the Fram Museum, the top tourist draw in Oslo.
