Forsyth writes about what happens when the dream of the cruising life meets reality, describing his experiences living the sailing dream as well as the disappointment, defeat, and surprising realities that came with it. Forsyth begins with how he joined a sailing community, acquired the skills, crewed on others’ boats, and found the funds to buy and equip his own "Alice Rose". Their voyages took them through the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River, and the North Atlantic from Labrador to Florida.

I attended the author’s seminar at the 2018 Toronto Boat Show, and was so impressed that I bought the book then and there. Besides writing a very entertaining account of his sailing experience, Forsyth’s intention is “to provide inspiration to those dreamers who haven’t yet taken that first step” to embrace the cruising life and, more importantly, to sail beyond the horizon of one’s home waters. Embarking on middle-age aboard his Alberg 29, he did just that. After getting his bearings on Georgian Bay as a novice sailor, he crewed on a Nonsuch 30 as part of a flotilla out of Mimico Yacht Club to the chilly Strait of Belle Isle and the rugged Labrador coast, mastering canals and acquiring local knowledge of numerous ports of call along the St. Lawrence River. Some years later, he, his wife and a friend sailed his beloved sloop Alice Rose back down to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, to the Iles de la Madeleine, around Nova Scotia, and returned to Hamilton via the Hudson River and Erie Canal. I would recommend this book to anyone contemplating cruising from Lake Ontario into those salt waters for the first time. You will profit by his hard-earned experience so well recounted here, making that dream a reality.
