NS2 – Navigation Safety 2

Navigation Safety 2 (NS2)

Like NS1, this examination is largely based off the collision regulations. It is likely best to memorize the regulations in preparation for the exam. In addition, NS2 requires knowledge of the Marine Personnel Regulations, specifically Part 2 pertaining to hours of rest and composition of the navigational watch. You will also be tested on you knowledge of the STCW Code section A-VIII/2 and the Canadian Notices to Mariners.

Recommended texts:

Collision Regulations – International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea, 1972. With Canadian Modifications, revised Sept, 2008 This is the printed (by the government) version of the Colregs.


A Seaman’s Guide to Rule of the Road This is more of a quick reference book. It is well suited to experienced mariners looking to brush up on their knowledge or for visual learners.


Other Resources:

STCW Code  – The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. As mentioned above you will need to have knowledge of section A-VIII/2 which describes standards of watchkeeping to be maintained.
