  1. Ross Wilson

Classic sailing text, covers everything from pleasure cruising to heavy weather sailing, including navigation, seamanship, boat gear, and maintenance.

I bought this edition at the TIBS about five years ago and have gone back to it frequently to refresh my knowledge on all things sailing and recharge my confidence at the helm. One of its outstanding features is the ubiquity of artist Mark Smith’s drawings to reinforce the author’s authoritative text. Safety afloat is a theme running through every chapter. Rousmaniere, an authority on safe practices and a member of the ASA’s Hall of Fame, elaborates on the lessons learned from the Fastnet Race in 1979 (in which he crewed) to accidents in the last decade. To quote the author, “Nobody knows it all. Nobody can know it all, but here (I hope) you will learn at least a little.” He is much too modest.
