As a youth, Nat Philbrick won a national sailing championship. Fast forward to the spring of 1992: Philbrick is in his late thirties, living with his family on Nantucket, feeling stranded and missing the long-ago thrill of victory. With the bemused approval of his wife and children, he attempts to become a competitor again. On ponds, bays, rivers, and finally at a championship on a lake in the heartland of America, he sails through storms and memories, racing for a prize and discovering something unexpected instead.
